Small Ragged Hole
There was a hole in the flag. Not a big hole, just a little rip from the edge of the blue, across a corner of white, and touching the red. Anything could have happened to it. Maybe it got caught on a sharp little something and snagged. Perhaps a moth stopped for a snack. Or maybe the hole formed when a stray bullet from a terrorist’s gun tore through.
The flag was a standard red white and blue, with worn edges and a weathered look to it; probably hanging on a pole beside some shoppe in any small town. On any old street with lots of other shoppes packed together, side-by-side. Peaceful. Until the day they came. The car screeched around corners and raced down the main road, three passengers and a driver all with guns blazing. Pedestrians and shoppers ducked for cover while bullets flew through air, windows, and flesh. Four people died that day. Many were wounded. Innocent people, born and raised in that town, on those streets. People who never saw a gun, let alone owned one.
It was over in seconds, but the damage remained. Families wept. Shoppes closed. Broken windows were boarded up. And one lone American flag now waved with a small, ragged hole.
